“We are terrified of ourselves, or at least the thoughts we know we inhabit. We hang onto the belief that we can run away from ourself and never be caught up with.” Gave me the chills.

When I was younger I thought I was the only one with this “civil war” inside my head. I was constantly self-sabotaging. I think old age comes with both a greater understanding of oneself, and less care about the opinions of others. Your 20/30s are incredibly difficult, and though I have some good memories I would not change my current state for the world.

There are two things that have altered my perception of change: living in the present and knowing I am powerless against many things. As a result, I try to just get going. I will know where I’m going when I get there. You can spend a lot of time avoiding and disconnecting out of exhaustion or fear but that leads to the same places. Sometimes you have to make a different choice and realize that there are things within your control that will bring positive change.
