Love all the William James! One of my favorite quotes is where he says that "Religion thus makes easy and felicitous what in any case is necessary..." Not sure if life as an Essene was all that easy, but I think its generally true that religion at its best helps people want to do many of the things we ought to do anyway (loving our neighbors, or helping the poor, or seeking harmony with the natural world, etc.) Obligations take on a kind of beauty within the right kind of framework. Though of course, not all frameworks are the same, and not all good frameworks have to be religious.
